My work in theatre is driven by big questions that involve individuals and their place in history and within systems. It makes surprising connections through complex, multi-disciplinary theatrical performance, includes a multitude of voices, and peels back mythologies to expose uncomfortable truths. It’s also highly entertaining. Through the collaborative process of creation, and the communal sharing of stories with audiences, I have the utopian hope of sowing seeds of empathy to manifest a more just, peaceful, and sparkling world.
Critical Mass Performance Group, which I founded in 1985, is a nationally recognized, collaborative ensemble that makes category-busting new works, performed in traditional and alternative spaces. Known for exuberant theatricality, astonishing collisions of ideas, and hybrid forms, our work includes epic historical projects, adaptations of classic texts, community-based social practice, and intimate interactive salons. We develop projects over years through multiple workshops and community engagement (think geologic time). We love casting a wide net, diving deep, and discovering wild intersections.
As a freelance director/scenic designer I have worked across the US at such theatres as Center Theatre Group, Portland Center Stage, East West Players, Boston Court Pasadena, Denver Center Theatre Company, Long Beach Opera, Georgia Shakespeare Festival, Actors Express, and others.
